If I could walk into my local Radio Shack without having to spend $40 on a cable I can get on Amazon or monoprice for $5 maybe they'd actually have customers. Not unsurprisingly, Linksys routers were also the most expensive by a margin of around $15.00 I was trying to find a router that I could put DDWRT on and the guy kept telling me that DDWRT is a secret project by the NSA and that Linksys were the only company that makes secure routers. I had a similar experience at a Radio Shack in a mall near here.
It's gotten just as bad at the other ones as well. I know that these kinds of policy are handed down from higher-ups, but that was ridiculous. I live in a little podunk town on the outskirts of Knoxville TN, and there's a Radio Shack about a mile up the road. I did buy from Lafayette and Olsen on occasion, but they were both more hobby stores.I'd say I'm surprised but I'm really not. We do still have Gateway Electronics and The Electronics Exchange who are mainly used and surplus dealers, so the loss of Radio Shack just means a longer drive for me. For example, I was modifying the control system on a cylindrical grinder and realized I needed another bridge rectifier, so I got one from Radio Shack rather than order a single part from one of the mail order suppliers. The Radio Shack you know only bought the name and used it to sell their junk. The original Radio Shack actually sold Ham radio equipment and components. The problem is that with overnight shipping, Newark, Mouser, and Allied pretty much rule the roost. Louis when I was a kid and I brought from all of them. You could get some fairly good items there but it was nowhere close to the old Walter Ashe Radio, Interstate Industrial Electronics, Radonics, Olive Electronics or Van Sickle Industrial Electronics. The present form of Radio Shack was about like Sears vs a real machine tool supplier.
